    BEYOND ZERO Film Process

    Building the Universe

    1. Ideation

During the summer, I set up my studio in Dimes Square downtown and began my design work. My time was devoted to sketching, research, and creating prototypes as I started building the distinct world envisioned for our sci-fi film.

While I made prototypes, Taylor conducted his own reasearch and worked on the script and the story. In this studio we also held auditions with the actors.

    2. The costumes

I was fortunate to have relocated to NEWTON as summer drew to a close, marking the beginning of the final design production phase. Countless hours were dedicated to sourcing materials and meticulously sewing. As the filming date approached, I found myself in a race against time to complete the garments.

‘90s NASA spacesuits were referenced for the design.

Blazer and skirt made of grey neoprine for the nurse.

The Liquid Cooling Garments worn by the Apollo astronauts underneath the spacesuit were referenced. LCG were designed to keep the astronaut's body temperature within normal ranges by allowing cool water to circulate through the tubes.

    3. Fitting with actors.

    4. Storyboarding

Storyboarding is a significant component of my creative process, requiring me to meticulously sketch out each scene. Interestingly, during the actual filming days, we seldom needed to consult these storyboards. However, upon entering the editing phase, I realized that our filmed sequences closely adhered to the original drawings.

    5. Production

Those were intense days. Crafting a sci-fi film on a tight budget was no small feat. Luckily, we had a dedicated crew, and the actors truly surpassed all expectations with their exceptional performances.

5am morning surise, our leading lady was brave and jumped in the ice cold ocean water, and we hurried to capture the rising sun.
We toiled in a cramped space, frequently reconstructing the set. We harnessed the versatility of WWII parachutes,  transforming them into multiple "hospital rooms."
Took the astronauts to outer space.
Adding final touches and color to the film.
